Longing for Spring

My facebook postings over the last month have been dominated by my tales of woe concerning the weather. I agonize over chopping ice on frozen buckets, the dangers my horses face while navigating ice-covered pastures, and the threat of snow during the driving journeys I’ve set out on this winter. My complaining won’t change a thing, but it gives me some sense of satisfaction when friends can commiserate with me.

As usual, I’m really looking forward to the days when the temperatures stay above freezing and the daylight hours are extended. There are horse fairs to attend, warm-up shows to prepare for, and 4-H contests to plan and participate in. Spring marks the time when the Midwestern horse world wakes from hibernation and is hungry for everything that horsemen love to do.

Wait a minute though! Each of those desired activities involves preparation. I’ll need to earn extra cash for horse fair shopping. There are horses to groom and condition for spring shows and rides. I have sewing to do to get this year’s outfits ready. Getting pastures in shape for spring and summer will require work. The list goes on and on.

I thought this was down time, but that’s not so. A little effort now will allow me to hit the ground running when the weather finally breaks. As an added benefit, keeping busy will make the time go by faster.

If you’re like me – wishing for April showers and May flowers – get busy now and get the jump on the season. You’ll enjoy Spring twice as much when it
finally arrives!
